UK Study Visa Requirements for Pakistani Students

Last updated: October 2026 · Category: By Country

The UK remains one of the most popular study destinations for Pakistani students — and the scale shows it. The UK issued 30,781 study visas to Pakistanis in the year ending December 2025. That figure tells you two things: the route is genuinely open to Pakistani students, and it is also competitive and carefully checked. This guide explains what UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) actually requires, so you can prepare properly instead of relying on rumours.

The basics: CAS first, visa second

You cannot apply for a UK Student visa without a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed university. The CAS is an electronic record, not a paper letter, and it confirms that the university has offered you an unconditional place and has checked your documents. You apply to the university first, meet its academic and English conditions, pay any deposit it requires, and then it issues your CAS. Only then does the visa process begin. Anyone who offers to "arrange" a visa without a genuine university offer is not helping you — they are putting you at risk of a ban.

English language requirement

Your university will set its own English requirement, usually proven through IELTS, TOEFL, or another approved test, at the level the course demands. Some universities accept alternatives for Pakistani students, such as a strong English grade in previous qualifications, but only if the university itself confirms it in writing. UKVI may also verify your English independently. Book your test early: test centres in Pakistan fill up before intakes, and a delayed result can cost you your CAS deadline.

Financial requirement — the most common refusal reason

You must show you can pay your first year's tuition (minus what you have already paid) plus living costs for the required period. The money must have been held in an acceptable account for the required holding period before you apply, and the bank statements must meet UKVI's exact format rules. This is where most refusals happen — not because students are dishonest, but because a statement is formatted wrong, the money moved at the wrong time, or the account is in someone else's name without proper evidence of the relationship. Read the official gov.uk guidance word by word, and if anything is unclear, ask your university's international office — they answer these questions every day, for free.

Tuberculosis test and other documents

Applicants from Pakistan must take a tuberculosis (TB) test at an approved clinic before applying — the certificate is part of your application. You will also need a valid passport, your CAS details, your academic documents, and evidence of your finances. Depending on your circumstances, UKVI may also ask for an interview to check that you are a genuine student: that you understand your course, why you chose that university, and what you plan to do afterwards. Answer honestly and specifically; memorised, generic answers are easy to spot.

Costs you must budget for

Beyond tuition and living costs, budget for the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, both of which change over time. Check the current amounts on gov.uk before you apply — do not rely on figures from older blogs or agents. Also budget for the English test, the TB test, and document attestation. A realistic total budget, prepared before you apply, prevents the painful situation of winning an offer you cannot afford to take up.

Timeline: work backwards from your course start

A sensible timeline starts at least nine months before your course: choose universities, take your English test, apply, receive offers, meet conditions, receive your CAS, prepare finances, take your TB test, and apply for the visa with enough time for processing. Visa processing times vary, and UKVI may ask for additional documents. Applying at the last minute is the single most avoidable cause of missed intakes.

Honest note: Visa rules and fees change — check the official page for the current cycle's requirements. A university offer does not guarantee a visa, and no agent can guarantee one either.
